Cat on a hot train

Often I travel betwwen Nanterre and Gare du Nord in Paris by train. It is the quickest way to get there when the trains are running and taxis can make me feel sick, particularly in Paris as the drivers insist you sit on the rear seat and drive like maniacs. On 26 September I took this route with one suitcase, and a folding Brompton in a shoulder bag. I ended up sitting in the end-of-carriage area with a smelly man and his smelly cat.

It was difficult to tell which of the two smelled worse. Fortunately he got off with his cat at Place d’√Čtoile, two stops before I changed at Chatelet des Halles for the line to Gare du Nord.

Cancer anyone?

Cigarettes are sold in France without individual brand packaging and with written and photographic warnings.

Another view of the Main River near Bischofsheim, as the sun was setting yesterday evening.

The River Main

This is the River Main near Bischofsheim in Germany, not far from where this tributary flows into the River Rhein.

I’m off!

The moment has come that I depart on London-Edinburgh-London. This 870 mile (1440 km) cycle ride is the longest I have ever done, and I have 117 hours to complete it. Assuming I won’t be writing much for the next five days, I thought I would leave you with this video of some fantastic images from the 2013 edition of the ride.

Dunwich Dynamo

This year I had to skip the annual Dunwich Dynamo bike ride, which was the 25th edition of the ride. Someone posted this historic video of ITV’s coverage of the 2006 ride, a wet one. At that time the ride was growing in numbers and had a record 700 participants. This year it was still growing with an estimated 2500 riders taking part. Apparently the story given in this video concerning the origins of the ride (although widely repeated) is a myth.

The Biddenden Twins

I’ve written about these conjoined twins before, here and here. I passed through the town on Sunday and thought I’d take the opportunity to update my previous photo and also show some of the words on the village sign.

I’m surprised to read that the one twin’s refusal to be separated from her dead sister is described in a way that suggests this inevitably led to her own death, because in the 12th Century, the era prior to antibiotics (and an understanding of infection, nevermind proper anaesthesia), such an operation would surely have resulted in her death anyway.

I’ve written previously about the village of Biddenden, here.
