The trench.

In a Remembrance Sunday service four years ago, I wondered at the stately old men crying. When someone told me that they were remembering the war they had lived through, I thought back on how times had changed. Bush had just invaded Afghanistan.

There was an interesting history program on the radio last night (I listened to it on my long drive) called When Memory Dies (link to listen again). The blurb of the program goes:

Jonathan Ali goes to the village of Hawkshaw near Manchester, where 39 men lost their lives in the First World War. A memorial lists their names, but do the locals remember why they died?
