I took this photo of the sun setting over the Atlantic ocean from Fresnaye in Cape Town a week ago. According to Escape Artist:

Introducing the divine real estate along the Atlantic Seaboard would not be complete without a bit about Fresnaye. High above the beaches, Fresnaye is located exactly between mountain and sea. The views are impressive to say the least. Palm trees line the streets with names like; La Croix, Coeur de Lion and Des Huguenots, granting the area an immediate flair. (For more information on the French Huguenots history in the Cape, read my April article on Cape Dutch Architecture). Homes on this hill or in any of the above mentioned beach or high end areas are priced at their lowest around half a million dollars and go up to over 6 million US dollars.

Note: I added the hyperlink to the Cape Dutch Architecture article.

The Wave

At the Gateway Shopping Centre in Umhlanga Rocks they have this machine that powers a perpetual wave. I managed to get a few good photos of this guy on his body board, but this is the only one that doesn’t have a readable logo of the advertiser on the back of the wave.

On the 23 December last year (!) we spent the morning on the beachfront: visiting a miniture model town, a snake park, swimming in the sea, having a rickshaw ride, and buying African crafts. In the afternoon we drove up to the abovementioned mall where we did a bit of shopping and had supper.

At the craft market I noticed that they are not as fond of haggling as at the souq in Oman. Prices are also clearly set in cooperation with other stall holders. On the other hand we were also not as good at haggling: I noticed that when Pinkie got the price down to a certain level she felt guilty and started haggling back up again.

Back home

I got back late last night from a short holiday in Cape Town and Durban. It’s strange to be back in this cold place with the short days and long nights, and the body is still adjusting to this and to the sleep deprivation of New Year’s Eve, followed by a long plane journey on New Year’s Day.

I had expected to post to this blog while I was away, but this was not possible in the end. I did manage to post some pictures to Flickr from my mobile phone while I was away.  The above photograph is my currently most favourited on Flickr.
