Police incident in Tandridge

image

The car is taped off with police ribbon. The driver has driven up the bank next to the roundabout and into the hedge.

I am on my way to Berlin to run some workshops for a client. I may post intermittently this week. Or not.

Twitter

image

I removed my twitter feed from the sidebar of my blog recently because it proved unstable. I can still be found here.

The photo of the “drowning bird” is an example of stencil graffiti that I spotted in Greenwich last weekend.

My trusty steed

image

It’s an off-road bike and they require more energy to peddle than the on-road version but it means that I can use bridle-ways from time to time. (And of course there are some nasty potholes (courtesy of Surrey County Council) to navigate!

A different view from the North Downs looking over the weald of Kent. This time I took a longer route up the down and will continue a little further into Kent, thus taking a longer route back again. Next week I am working in Berlin again and will have reduced opportunities to cycle.

Stalking the photographer

This is a popular spot for tourists to pose for photographs in Paris: the Arc de Triomphe from the Champs Ellysee. I have no idea who these people are.

Oxted from another angle

image

This is looking back down from the North Downs just as I descend into Kent. I’m out on my 20 kilometre circular ride which takes me about 200 metres up in altitude and them 200 metres back down.

The Entrepid Cyclist

image

I recently wrote about the velib “free” bicycle hire scheme in Paris.

At the Arc de Triomphe on Sunday I noticed this brave cyclist come down the Champs Ellysee and navigate the formidable traffic circle around the site.

Bravo. His other options were to push the bike through the pedestrian underpass or to take a less direct route using one of the safer, circular roads around the monument. Given the throngs of tourists in the area, the underpass was probably not a good choice on Sunday evening.

Cycle lanes in Paris

image

image

On my trip to Paris this week I took note of these cycle lanes.

As you can see, the city authorities have narrowed the road, taking space to expand the pavement and put in dedicated cycle lanes. The pedestrian area is clearly demarcated from the cycling area. The second photo shows that cyclists and pedestrians even have their own separate crossings.

Recently in Berlin I was impressed by the provision of proper lanes for safe cycling. Paris (in some suburbs at least) also seems to be “streets ahead” of the UK.
