Raspberry

image

A few years ago I planted 3 raspberry plants. These have now expanded to over 10 plants which produce raspberries from June to July, giving me and the birds much pleasure.

I like this photograph because it shows an ant.  The ants have a mutualistic relationship with the aphids that they bring to the plants and tend. The aphids produce honeydew which the ants consume. Because the aphids are quite destructive to my plants I don’t really appreciate them. As long as I can keep the numbers down I tolerate both the ants and aphids.  I make a spray of water infused with garlic and buchu leaves which I spray on the plants. Because this mixture is not poisonous (it seems to repel the aphids rather than kill them) it permits the ladybirds Coccinellidae to come and finish the aphids off.  The aphids in my lavender plants excrete a fluffy wax coating for protection against ladybirds. It is not a protection from my spray but I tend to leave them alone.  Another great predator in my garden are the spiders. Unfortunately these keep coming indoors and I have to catch and “release” them outside again.

Lavender blue

image

Lavenders green, Diddle, diddle,
  Lavenders blue
You must love me, diddle, diddle,
  cause I love you,
I heard one say, diddle, diddle,
  since I came hither,
That your and I, diddle, diddle,
  must lie together.

This might not be the version that you heard on your grandmother’s knee, but it’s the oldest surviving version of this English folksong.

Lavender

image

According to Wikipedia:

Lavandula are a genus of 39 species of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region south to tropical Africa and to the southeast regions of India. The genus includes annuals, herbaceous plants, subshrubs, and small shrubs. The native range extends across the Canary Islands, North and East Africa, south Europe and the Mediterranean, Arabia, and India. Because the cultivated forms are planted in gardens world-wide, they are occasionally found growing wild, as garden escapees, well beyond their natural range. Because Lavender cross-pollinates easily, however, there are countless variations within the species.

I have two species of the plant growing in my garden. The one above which appears to be Spanish Lavender, Lavandula stoechas and the one below which appears to be some kind of Cotton Lavender Santolina chamaecyparissus.

This one might not be a “true” lavender at all.

The Victorians

image

A Roman statue in Bath? Well actually these pseudo-classical statues around the ancient Roman baths in Bath were built and placed there by the Victorians. How thoughtful.

Cornmarket Street in Oxford

I have played around with this photograph a bit, but it’s not quite the effect I was aiming to achieve.

Prague Square Time Lapse

I took this about a year ago in Prague, but found the video recently and think it works quite well with the Hungarian Waltz as a soundtrack…
