Baby Mandrake

image

A few weeks ago I was rewatching a Harry Potter film and saw the pupils re-potting magical Mandrake plants:

Whenever unearthed, the root screams. The scream of a mature Mandrake when it is unearthed will kill any person who hears it, but a young Mandrake’s screams will usually only knock a person out for several hours. When Hogwarts students study Mandrakes in Herbology class, Pomona Sprout had the students wear earmuffs to protect their ears from the Mandrake’s cries.

A mandrake is of course a real plant, in the nightshade family.

On Saturday, in IKEA, I spotted these Ginseng plants which reminded me of the fictitious mandrake[/url].  They are labelled as “bonsai”, so presumably are not babies.

Bumerang

image

Well what would you call something, like a coat-hanger, that when thrown away didn’t return to you?

I have written before about strange IKEA product names.

Summer fruits - help yourself

image

The hedgerows around here are starting to fill up with food and it’s almost time to start collecting. The berries near the top of the North Down are just not quite as ripe as the ones at the bottom which means we (and the birds) have an extended picking season.

Immobile phone

image

This is the future. Mobile phone technology is replacing shiny booths across the land with these abandoned and non-working souvenirs.
