Grey day in Basel

image

As I enjoy a lovely sunny Autumn day in England today I can look back at the bleak and grey photos from last week in Basel and smile.

It wasn’t me!

image

Someone has left their initials on this electricity box, which also sports a faded and worn poster protesting against people trafficing and prostitution.

Spotted the other night in downtown Basel.

Basel bicycle

image

I thought this was a somewhat quaint & retro bicycle, with its bespoke leather carry-bag, dynamo on the front wheel to power a light, and carrier-bag saddle cover to keep the seat dry.

Devilish sign

image

I was working in Basel this past week, and I spotted a lot of graffiti in public places. Besides for the depressingly grey weather and the efficient trams the place didn’t really remind me of the Basel I had visited a few years ago. There were even stickers with graffiti designs plastered on walls and signposts.

Oxted - a town of winos?

image

WineOneHundred is one of the latest additions to the Oxted High Street.  I now count two specialist wine shops, 3 supermarkets/mini-supermarkets plus a corner shop or two which now sell wine (and other drinks). Then of course there are the neighbouring villages and the on-line retailers which service us with deliveries.  No wonder we have to have weekly recycling collections whereas most of the country is on a fortnightly collection cycle!

On the plus side (as noted before) there are other healthier businesses also setting up in Oxted…

Westerham Farmers Market

image

Here are a couple of photographs from the Westerham Farmers Market which takes place every Sunday from 10am to 3pm. There is a range of produce available: locally produced fruit & vegetables, cheeses, wine, bread and cakes, preserves, fresh fish, hand reared meat, plants, and more. An initiative of this nature really should be getting more support than it does. I have been there for a few week’s running and there have not been the crowds that I expected.

image

The market is held in the grounds of the Grasshopper Inn on the corner of the A25 and Clackett’s Lane. It even has a (somewhat forlorn) event on Facebook.

Wolfe Commemorations

image

I wrote a few days ago about the Wolfe celebrations in Westerham over the past weekend.  Here are a couple more photos. Above the bright poster displayed in local shop fronts, below some of the “mannered mob” and “Quebec House Guard” (that was my guess).
