Black, grey and red

Three of my favourite colours. This is one of the sentinels of the North Downs.

Painting trees with light

It’s a bit cold for this kind of malarkey at the moment, but at least sunset is at an early hour.

The Lift Trap

image

Having been stuck in a lift once before I’m thinking I’ll just give this one a miss.

Fireworks

image

A few nights ago I arrived home to find my neighbours setting off fireworks. One of my other neighbour’s dogs also came out to investigate. He didn’t like the noisy ones (pictured) and went back inside.  The RSPCA has some advice for pet-owners (PDF).  I know, horse/stable door/bolted.

More Bracken

image

I was surprised to read (/write) recently that braken is carcinogenic. Elsewhere you can find recipes for fern, although they do state:

Some ferns contain carcinogens, and Bracken has been implicated in stomach cancer. Despite this, most people can eat ostrich and cinnamon fern fiddleheads without any problems, and ostrich fern fiddleheads are a traditional dish of New Brunswick. In 1994, there were several instances of food poisoning associated with raw or lightly cooked fiddleheads in New York state and Western Canada. No definitive source of the food poisoning was identified, and authorities recommended thorough cooking of fiddlehead ferns to counteract any possible unidentified toxins in the plant.

Cycling on Pilgrim’s Way

image

It’s good to see a car patiently following a bicycle down our narrow lanes, at a distance, as this one was.  Cycling Info reminds us to give cyclists room:

One of the biggest irritations when cycling is cars that pass too closely when overtaking. The danger of close passing is heightened when the car / van is travelling quickly.

The Highway code states:

“give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car (see Rules 211-215)”

Highway code

“As much room as a car” leaves some discretion, but, I would have thought three feet would be a good minimum. My grandma used to think the law was enough space for cyclist to fall off, without hitting the overtaking car. The highway code doesn’t quite say that but it seems a good rule of thumb.
