After a long but productive day.

The story revolves around a young boy who was nearly taken out by a bad driver (one of the quarry lorry drivers). His mum complained at the local police station only to be advised that she shouldn’t let her son ride his new bicycle around Oxted. You couldn’t make it up.
Except of course that you could. We have evidence of this in the headline of the Surrey Mirror which tells us that push bikes have been “banned” in Oxted (their quotation marks). Of course there is no ban and I feel this exaggeration only undermines a legitimate grievance. Of course they are exaggerating in order to sell papers and it works (well it did on me). Secondly the article is relying on hearsay and selective paraphrasing (the angry mother told us that the police told her something and we will give you only the juicy bits).
Nonetheless my personal view is that Surrey County Council should reduce the speed limit on all Oxted streets to 20 mph (where there is not a completely segregated bicycle lane and to 30 mph where there is one). This principle should include the A25 where it passes through the town.
I believe this is a serious issue - elsewhere in the country a child on a bicycle was killed this week, and drivers in Oxted are becoming far too impatient as they rush around. The speed reduction would send out a clear message to motorists and make the streets more friendly for our children again.

This is the stall under the arches between London Bridge underground and mainline railway stations where I spotted a homeless person spooning servings of delicacies from the display tubs directly into his mouth. The individual is not pictured here, and of course when I say spooning I do mean shoveling.
I will never forget the image and while I admire the chutzpah of the person concerned I could not bring myself to buy anything here in future. I almost said again but I have not yet had the pleasure of tasting their wares.

Time to leave the city and head home. It’s been a productive day even if I wish there had been more hours in the day.

The river looks a bit greasy and grey (like the Limpopo, allegedly).
Crossing the Seine, and feeling completely sane, we ate lunch at les fous de l’ille on I’lle Saint-Louis with the other “crazies”.
