Staffhurst Wood

The time of the bluebells is nearly over now in this “ancient woodland”.

The volcano again

Scenes of growing despair at Gatwick Airport as holiday makers face delayed flights and the prospect of only travelling to Spain in 2 or more day’s time.

les pompiers de Brussel

image

De Pompier van Brussel-Zuid (The fireman of Brussels South) is the name of a 1960’s cartoon TV program, which can be found on on YouTube.  If you follow the link, you will see that someone has commented that the lyrics are hilarious, if you understand the Brussels dialect. Meanwhile the actual Pompiers of Brussels, have their own blog, where they have recorded various trade union demonstrations and blockades that they participated in. In case you think that these firemen are only serious union cadres, let me point out that they sometimes do things just for a laugh.

See also: Les Pompiers (de Paris), the fire-brigade (of Uxbridge), and the firemen (of Ashby-de-la-Zouch).

Congress Column

image

A landmark in Brussels is this column situated on the Place du Congrès / Congresplein and commemorating the formation of the Belgian state and constitution by the National Congress in 1830-1831. The column itself was erected between 1850 and 1859. Allegedy it was inspired by Trajan’s Column in Rome but I’m sure there was no shortage of similar monuments around the world to copy. A statue of King Leopold I of Belgium surmounts the column, while as a memorial to the Belgian victims of the First World War, five unknown soldiers were buried at the foot of the monument, the 11th of November 1922. Their tomb is mounted by an eternal flame.

You can see the foxy graffito in the background of my photograph.

Eugène Verboeckhoven

image

I liked the spring blossoms and the tram, stopping here at Eugène Verboeckhoven Square in Schaerbeek, Belgium. The square is named after the painter who died in this commune on 19 January 1881. Schaerbeek is one of nineteen bilingual communes in the Brussels Capital Region.
