St Wenceslas Grave

image

In the centre of this chapel, of St Francis, is a gravestone marking the grave of Wenceslas I. The chapel is part of the Convent of St Agnes of Bohemia convent founder, and sister of Wenceslas I (he of the “Good king” Christmas carol).

Strangely, the Cathedral of St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert (pictured below) which is found within the grounds of Prague Castle also claims to hold the grave of Wenceslas I.

Wenceslas was murdered in a plot orchestrated by his brother Boleslav who then assumed the Bohemian throne.  Wenceslas is a subject of a King in the Mountain legend, which has it that the king and a “sleeping army” will arise under certain conditions and fight off Czech enemies.

A Recital

image

This evening’s recital was at The Holywell Music Room in Oxford.  I arrived early and was able to see the performers rehearse (as pictured above).  I filmed the recital, so I may post the video in the coming days.

I was in Prague again last week and so took some photographs one evening of the city.

Cracked and Uncracked

image

I took these photographs in Oxted last Saturday.  Both show the same scene, but through adjacent panes of glass.

Lost Cat

image

Angel was last seen on Wednesday 3rd February 2010 in the Caterham area of Surrey. CR3 postcode.

There’s something sad in the fact that this poster is still up in the Ellice Road car park in Oxted.

Children and off-licence

image

On Saturday evening Miney and I spent a while driving around looking for an off-licence. It seems that these business are dying out: alcohol can be bought cheaply at supermarkets, corner shops, and even petrol stations here in the UK. Miney wanted to buy a couple of miniature bottles as a gift for her friend’s birthday, but what we discovered is that supermarkets, corner shops and petrol stations don’t sell miniatures.

So we drove around for a while finding a relic of the UK’s liquor laws. What I found amusing about the above shop is that they have a sign in the window that only two school-children are allowed in the shop at the same time!  We found the shop in Kenley which caused some further amusement as we remembered the Kenlee song.
