Poppy field in Kent
I went looking for poppies on Sunday and found these fields near Eynsford.  I was disappointed in the poppy show at this spot this year. According to the BBC:

The wild field poppy enjoys cultivated, disturbed soil, which is why swathes of scarlet blooms often appear in cornfields. The basic form has scarlet, single flowers, each petal often marked at its base with a black blotch. Size varies according to the soil in which plants grow, the poorer the soil, the smaller and paler the blooms.

For some more images from my outing see the short video here.

Big up

Writing in the Mediterranean skies and sea, courtesy of the French railway company SNCF and the graffitists of Marseille.

If you ask me the picture is of a big cat smoking some strange kind of large cigarette.

Eric Clapton

image

Will be performing here live in 30 minutes time… with Steve Winwood.

Update: The concert was a great success notwithstanding the person who spilled wine on our stuff ... and the fact that we only noticed this at the end of the concert.  Here’s another photograph that I took at “half-time”... as you can see we didn’t have the best seats/view in the house.

Further evidence emerges

That there was some kind of party while I was away (not last week but the previous trip).

A cyclist in France

image

On my trip to France last month I noticed a lot of cyclists out and about. Unlike this rider most of the cyclists we saw looked like they were doing a serious road route like this one because we encountered them along the road through the Ollioules Gorge.  Description of this dramatic geographical feature here, and historical photograph by Édouard Baldus here.

Fire hydrant

image

Or perhaps bouche d’incendie since this one is French. I found a blog that purports to celebrate fire hydrants (link goes to the French entry). It doesn’t celebrate them very well (in my opinion); it just posts a photograph of them.  If you are into celebrating that kind of thing (I’m not) then have a look here for a site that celebrates fire fighting, fire fighters, fire fighters striking, fire fighters with burned off fingers, ....
