A very important warning

Beware of mind control. Your thoughts and actions may already have succumbed to this real and present danger.

Ants controlled by parasites
Mind controlling wasps and zombie spiders
How your cat is making you crazy

You were warned.

The familiar view

image

Of Oxted from the Woldingham viewpoint this afternoon. It’s been a lovely spring day and cycling conditions on the bridleways are good.

Stolen bicycle

Or should one more correctly caption this: non-stolen bicycle wheel? Our nearby neighbours at Cycle Woking have some handy bicycle security tips

Spynes Mere

image

Spynes Mere is a wetland nature reserve of 14 ha, created from restored sand workings by WBB Minerals who lease the site to the [Surrey] Wildlife Trust.

Before sand was extracted the area was farmland. Spynes is a very old word, in use before the Norman Conquest to describe the area. It means summer fattening pasture, and is correctly pronounced spines, like the spine of a thorn.

Today, Spynes Mere comprises three lakes, which flow into the Redhill Brook.

Read on at the Surrey Wildlife Trust Website.

Last week/this week

image

Last Sunday this cycle path was covered with several inches of snow and ice.

image

This Sunday (yesterday) the snow on the path and surrounding fields was completely melted. The air was still cold, partly due to the headwind, and despite the headwind I made better time on this stretch of my journey.

Ducks get their pond back

image

What a difference seven days make. The ducks that I photographed last week with the frozen pond are reunited with the full expanse of water. With all the splashing and chasing going on I suspect there was a touch of spring in the duckie air.

Flowers!

image

So another Valentine’s Day passes without flowers. But I received a “present” of sorts from my local farm shop (Flower Farm) as they shovelled their snow from their driveway onto my cyclepath (well ok, the public cyclepath). I would be very embarrassed if I had done something like that to one of my customers… and I must be one of their Most Loyal Customers. I wonder what they will say when I point this out to them?
