Potholing

image

I spotted a notice that this road in Oxted, which has had potholes filled and refilled frequently over the past few years, is now to be completely resurfaced. One of the problems, as many people have highlighted, is that Surrey County Council’s contractor doesn’t seem to be brilliant in the repair department and possibly the contractual relationship is not adequately managed by the Council. A couple of years ago a local newspaper ran a “post a pothole” feature. One ratepayer commented:

I have been trying literally for years to persuade SCC to properly supervise CARILLON, their long-time road maintenance contractor, without any effect at all. I have written to my local county councillor, walked the local roads with him and provided him with many photographs. He shows interest but is apparently unable to achieve any improvement. I have photographs taken just after repair and of the same holes three weeks later in as bad condition as before because they were not properly repaired. SCC seem to be quite content to hand out money to CARILLON without any expert inspection of the work. We pay as much for a bad repair as we would for a good one – but more often.

Perhaps it will be more cost-effective if they resurface this entire road. It will also be interesting to see whether our new councillor responsible for transport and the environment, convicted drink-driver John Furey does anything to improve matters.

My preferred site for reporting potholes (and other local problems like graffiti, fly-tipping, broken pavings, lighting and parking issues) is FixMyStreet since it is possible for everyone to share and track progress on the site.

The pond at Crawley Down

Another photo from the same perspective as the last one, and the one before. However the ducks now seem to harbour the false belief that I will feed them.

The fingers of Spring

With Spring, new shoots are emerging from plants and trees, as with this tree over the canal in York.

A bicycle lane in York

image

How convenient for the motorists of York that their bicycle lanes serve a dual purpose as parking spaces….

Time Lapse of Master Park

Here’s the video that I made last weekend. It’s a rather boring subject, but it’s given me some experience and some ideas.

Time lapse

image

I’m filling up a memory card or two trying to test time-lapse photography on a patch of sky and clouds. In the shot: my Canon 20D, hama tripod, TC-80N3 controller and a cloudless sky.

This was yesterday: today there is wall to wall cloud, and no sky.
