Let sleeping ducks lie

image

I’d never seen ducks sleeping on water before.

Godstone from the Caterham Viewpoint

image

With the Weald of Kent in the background.  From here I climbed up a short way to War Coppice Road where I overtook two cyclists at speed. One of them took this as a challenge and caught me up. At the end of the road we stopped and chatted a few minutes while waiting for his friend.

Autumn

image

In Great Church Wood, Woldingham. The wet mud under the leaves yesterday made cycling conditions a bit sticky in places.

This is one of my favourite local woods. What I least enjoy about it is that dog owners treat it as a doggie-toilet.

Not a talker

image

A somewhat disconcerting figure to have sitting behind you at the cinema, even if it is a community screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

From the air

The Isle of Wight and The Solent which separates England’s largest island from the mainland. This photograph was taken looking in a southerly direction.

Or, more appropriately in this case, ¡Adiós!.

Mersea Island

image

In the background of this photograph is Essex, while in the foreground is Mersea. The Pyefleet Channel separates the two. Wikipedia tells us that:

Mersea Island (formerly Mersey Island) is the most easterly inhabited island in the United Kingdom, located marginally off the coast of Essex, England, 9 miles (14 km) to the southeast of Colchester. It is situated in the estuary area of the Blackwater and Colne rivers and has an area of around 7 square miles (18 km2). The name ‘Mersea’ is derived from the Old English meresig meaning ‘island of the pool’.

All very interesting, but Mersea is definitely West of a number of UK cities and towns (e.g. Norwich). Therefore the most easterly inhabited island in the UK is surely .... Great Britain!

Interestingly, Wikipedia gives as a reference to the claim that Mersea Island is the most easterly inhabited island in the United Kingdom, the West Mersea Town Council website, which itself only states:

Mersea Island is (allegedly) the most easterly inhabited island in Britain.

Looking at the Wikipedia discussion page I see that someone has already pointed this all out to the Wiki community, on 11 January 2011. Between then and now, the Wikipedia article has been edited 23 times, although some of those edits have been to insert or remove what the editors refer to “acts of vandalism”.
