Old Oxted to New Oxted, via Hever

Here’s a fast-motion view of yesterday’s cycle ride, from Old Oxted to Hever and back to (New) Oxted. The trip is approx. 38 km, and I did it in approx. 2 hours 8 minutes at an average speed of approx. 18 km/h.

The unfortunate incident of road rage occurs at 2 minutes 44 seconds into the video.  It looked like the driver was going to hit me (because I objected loudly and strongly) to his dangerous pass, but he just acted menacingly and called me a prat. Even he couldn’t spoil the ride.  What I enjoyed most about the ride was seeing all the “upsidedown trees” (a feature of this time of the year). What I enjoyed least about the ride (besides for the menace) was getting my feet soaked (in a flooded road) 10 minutes into the ride and then cycling the rest of the way with cold feet.

Trivial festive facts:

You should be able to spot: 1 donkey (and cart), 2 flooded roads, 3 railway bridges, 4 motorcyclists, 5 chelsea tractors, 6 horses, 7 children, 8 dogs, 9 potholes, 10 cyclists, 11 intersections and 12 farm gates in the video.

Here is a map of the route I took:

Another country

Every so often one comes across a driver who thinks he is in another country.

The new highway code, part 1

image

After careful observation of how people actually drive, I can share with you the new highway code, which replaces the previous, boring, highway code of books and theory.

Part 1: When you enter a 30 mph zone, drive as close to the car in front of you as possible, as indicated in the accompanying photographs. To the casual observer it should look as if the car in front is towing you with a normal sized towbar.

Bicycle theft: tip 3

image

It might not be a good idea to park your bicycle down a deserted alley where there is little passing pedestrian traffic. However where it is used by many cyclists to park their bikes it is a more attractive proposition. Bear in mind, when you are parking in a facility with lots of bicycles, that you probably don’t want your bicycle to be the easiest to steal. Invest in a good lock, or two.

Bicycle theft: tip 2

image
Your bicycle lock is only as secure as the thing it is attached to. Thieves might saw down the small sapling (for example) that you have locked your bicycle to, and carry off your bike.

Bicycle theft: tip 1

image

Don’t lock your bicycle to a pole where a thief could simply lift the lock over the pole and carry off your bicycle.

Cycling with earphones

image

I have to doubt the wisdom of cycling in a city with headphones like this on one’s ears. My other observation is that this car is overtaking too closely, in contravention of Rule 163 of the Highway Code.
