On The Ridge

image

At this time of the year it is always more pleasant to get out for a ride in the middle of the day, even if it has to be a short one. I’ve had some decent mudguards installed and was trying them out yesterday. Although there were patches of sunshine the roads were still wet in places, and muddy in others. They say that 1 hour’s exercise 5 times a week is better for one’s fitness than a single ride of 5 hours each week. I’ll be trying to test that over the winter, without sticking to the number 5 in that equation, necessarily.

Spider season

image

The webs are looking quite fine these autumn mornings. Most of them have spiders sitting in the webs, waiting. Food is probably getting scarce now.

Small empty

image

In Clapham on Sunday I noticed an empty bottle of spirits balanced on the bus stop sign. A strange place to leave litter and if we had a refundable deposit on bottles this might not happen.

Where there’s smoke…

image

So I picked up my car from a service yesterday afternoon. On the way home I heard a representative of the advertising industry explain that they were going to start screening adverts for e-cigarettes because these were “not tobacco products” and did not entail “smoking” and we’re therefore not subject to the same ban. When pushed he conceded that if evidence emerged that e-cigarettes became a gateway drug to tobacco products, they could review this decision. He emphasised several times that there could be no confusion in the adverts between e-cigarettes and tobacco products and/or smoking.

I then stopped in a service station where I saw e-cigarettes for sale, advertised as “the future of smoking”. So on TV and movie adverts this is a clearly distinct product, but on shop shelves there is a blurring of the products? I guess that our corrupt political representatives will prevaricate on this topic, as Tony Blair did with tobacco advertising and formula one. For as long as they can anyway.

Taxi driver tries to run cyclist off road?

Did this professional driver deliberately try to run me off the road, twice, or was he distracted due to his operating a mobile phone?  Incompetence is easy to confuse for malice.

Mobile phone driver (CA14XOC)

image

I had a discussion with this driver yesterday, as I overtook him on my bicycle. I noticed he was on his mobile phone, so signalled to him to put it down. He hooted at me so I let him pull up next to me and asked if he was aware that it is illegal to drive and use your mobile phone.

He replied that sure it was illegal but it was safe because he was in a queue of traffic. I said it wasn’t safe and asked why he thought it was illegal. He asked me if I drive a car. I asked what relevance that was, but acknowledged that I have a motor car and that I drive. He said “Well then you speed and that’s also breaking the law”.

So basically he is saying everyone with a car breaks the law, and I am a hypocrite because I break the law. Clearly this man is not a hypocrite. He’s an idiot though.
