This is the famous Devil’s Bridge near Aberystwyth in Wales. As you can make out in my photograph there are actually three bridges built on top of each other. The torrent of water below is the Devil’s Punchbowl, which also looked to me to be at least three pools carved by the water in the rock.

If you are wondering why there is no devil in Wales (anymore), you need to read the legend of the bridge .

Choir of hope

image

In Aberystwyth yesterday we bumped into Côr Gobaith

Translated as Choir of Hope, Côr Gobaith sing songs of peace, justice and sustainability in Welsh and English, not to mention several African songs and a radical Norwegian anthem! The choir is run consensually and is open to all. We perform in Aberystwyth on the last Saturday of every month, singing against wars waged in our name and collecting money for appropriate causes.

This is Humanity, emerging from the horrors of war, as depicted at the National War Memorial in Aberystwyth in Wales. More about this statue and the monument at Letters from Aberystwyth.

Sheep Sign

image

image

I took these photographs during a legs break while driving through a national park in Wales earlier today. Although I’m as fond of sheep as the next human, I do find it disappointing that our national parks seem so devoid of wildlife.

Could we seriously have a debate about introducing wolves, or perhaps endangered species like rhino, elephant and hippopotamus, which have all lived here in the past?

Bunsen burns

image

Robert Wilhelm Eberhard Bunsen (30 March 1811 – 16 August 1899) is buried in Heidelberg in Germany where this statue in a square also commemorates his life and achievements. He appears to have spectacular sideburns but is more famous for his chemical achievements, including the ‘invention’ of an improved version of the burner used for chemical experiments.
