First versus The First

image
Above is the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Oxted. The picture below is of The First Church of Christ Scientist, in Boston. The latter is the original site of the church founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1879 and is apparently the only one that has the article The in front of it.

Boston Public Library

image

This is the first publicly supported municipal library (established 1848) in the United States, the first large library open to the public in the United States, and the first public library to allow people to borrow books and other materials and take them home to read and use.

The Electric Wheelchair

I came across this fellow driving his mobility scooter eratically down a road in Boston recently. After giving him a wide berth, I stopped at a traffic light. He came up behind me, tried to overtake on the inside, and knocked into my leg. Fortunately he didn’t cause me harm, or knock me over. Unfortunately the incident at the end is off-camera.

A musical cyclist

Enjoy the show, which is slightly spoiled by the photo-bomb (by some unknown people).  I spotted this young woman drumming her bicycle outside Quincy Market in Boston last weekend.  I asked her where the other wheel was from her bicycle, and she said it had been stolen.  Noticing that there was a bicycle helmet on the bollard behind her, I asked her if she pushed this bicycle around. She replied that she had another bicycle that she used to get around on and that it was locked up around the corner.

A Segway Tour

I came across this group of people riding Segways on a public road in Boston. (This would be illegal in the UK, where these vehicles can be used neither on public roads nor footpaths).  The people appeared to be doing a guided tour, presumably this one.

Boston Harbour Timelapse

Two short videos spliced together, showing the Boston city skyline, and the harbour, from the Long Wharf, once the busiest pier in the busiest port in colonial America.

Charles River Timelapse

This is the freshwater section of the river, upstream from the sea locks. The Longfellow Bridge (known as the salt and pepper bridge) is on the right, and MIT campus is over on the opposite bank.  I filmed this in the Charles River Reservation.
