Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul

image

I’m standing looking at this modern church on a cold but sunny day in Paris. You can read about this church, which was built on the site of a prison, [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Vincent-de-Paul,_Paris]here [/here].

Textures

image

I love the texture created by this light dusting of snow on the trees and mountain, in the Savoy Region of France.

Snowing the whole day

image

On Saturday it snowed the whole day, which was a strain as visibility was poor, particularly higher on the mountain. It was also fairly cold and windy and we had descended and hit the bar at 15:30. Still nothing really beats fresh snow…

#BloodyCyclists

In summer I was cycling in France and as you can see in this video they also have a problem there with cyclists riding two abreast and hogging the middle of the lane!

Permeability

image

I was interested to see the concept of filtered permeability being put to use on Parisian streets, like this one. The metal bollards prevent cars using the streets as routes through the city. Only locals would access the street in their car (and then they might struggle to find parking. Other metal bollards put an end to the Parisian habit of parking cars on the pavement). Meanwhile cyclists and pedestrians can pass through at will. Previously I have seen this working in York.

It keeps motor vehicles onto main roads, and creates quieter residential and business zones within the city that provide a better living environment. Children were playing in the street and the pavement cafés and restaurants were more pleasant than those a block away. The streets had more of a community vibe, and I saw my first French hipsters.  They look like hipsters in any other country.
