Sweden
You may find yourself shooting through the Swedish countryside on a train, and you may find that the general atmosphere is more dull and depressing than in the UK on a bad day, and you may wonder quite why the people around you are so cheerful and friendly.

Well my train arrived here on this dark cold night and I trudged up the road to the hotel, with my shoes squeaking and cracking on the pavement - evidence that it had snowed earlier today.
This is the night-time view from my room and it’s about the best I have seen of this Swedish city so far. Across the sound lies the Danish sister city of Helsingar. The two cities are connected by 125 ferries every day and the journey takes a mere 20 minutes. Helsingar is known in English, through the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, as Elsinore. Unfortunately I probably won’t have time to take the ferry trip this time. But talking of Denmark, and I might have mentioned this before, there are more pigs in the country than people.

I’m impressed by the ecological credentials of the hotel where I stayed last week in Vasteras, Sweden. They have significant energy saving measures and have been pushing these since 1994 (at least that’s what they claim).
As you can see from the photo above, guests are encouraged to sort their waste in their rooms. They also do the whole “please reuse your towels” thing, and have a central bin for batteries near the lift on each floor of the hotel.
In addition there are posters around the hotel encouraging women to have their breasts examined for cancer. At least, as I don’t understand Swedish, that’s what I think they are doing.

Today is jewelsmar’s birthday. I phoned her this morning (her time, but this evening my time). I had to phone back, because her Swedish visitor Erik was on the phone. And I got thinking that the last time I physically saw jewelsmar was back in August 2001, in Stockholm. The picture above shows sunset on 18 August 2001, the Stockholm skyline, and some hot-air balloons floating overhead.
Stockholm is apparently sometimes called the Venice of the North and the city is spread out on 25 small islands. That said, the entire Stockholm archipelago contains 25,000 islands (more or less). I am also somewhat tired of all these Venice comparisons. Any town or city with a bit of water invites the comparison, it seems. A simple search on google for the phrase Venice of the North brings up St Petersburg, East Manchester, Amsterdam, and Bruges on the first page. That’s ignoring all the “Little Venices” around the place.
