I was in Prague again last week and so took some photographs one evening of the city.

The Bishops of Prague

image

Looking down on the tourists, streaming off Charles Bridge and making their way up to the old town square.  At the time the statues were put here, Charles Bridge was the only bridge across the Vltava river (and was simply known as the Stone Bridge). One assumes that this is why these statues of important people were placed in this prominent position.

Madonna of Most

image

Recognisably one of the oldest types of the Czech Graceful Madonna, which developed in the latter half of the 14th Century and in many variants represents a half-length figure of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus. With the typical features of the Mother’s face and the way the child is clad in a long robe it reminds one of the Byzantine or Italian models formed by merging of both. The little goldfinch is an Italian motif as well and symbolises Christ’s role of martyr and Saviour. The goldfinch is often depicted on thorny shrubs from which the crown of thorns was made for Jesus to wear before the Crucifixion. The back of the panels reveals a painted window (fenestra coeli), where the worshippers peep through as if to watch the Heavenly Kingdom opening to those who listened to the voice of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. The painting was presumably carried in liturgical processions.

Prague before 1350
Origins unknown, later in the Capuchin Monastery Church of the Assumption in Most
On loan from the Bishopric of Litomerice

The words above were found on a plaque next to the painting, in one of the collections of the National Gallery in Prague. This is in the building that formerly comprised St Agnes Convent, that now houses the permanent exhibition of Medieval Art in Bohemia and Central Europe.

Prague Castle at Sunset

image

Prague Castle is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest coherent castle complex in the world with an area of almost 70000 m². This is a view from the other side of the river, with the famous Charles Bridge also shown in the photograph above.

St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert Cathedral

image

Saint Vitus’ Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Prague, and the seat of the Archbishop of Prague. Located within Prague Castle and containing the tombs of many Bohemian kings and Holy Roman Emperors, this cathedral is an excellent example of Gothic architecture and is the biggest and most important church in the country.

~ from wikipedia.

The relics of St Wenceslas are kept in a chapel inside the Cathedral.

Three lies

image

I note that this shop uses three words to describe its product that do not describe the product: crystal, magic & photo.
