It’s in the gênes

image

How embarrassing, that even Google translate knows what gêne means: inconvenience.

Cat on a hot train

image

Often I travel betwwen Nanterre and Gare du Nord in Paris by train. It is the quickest way to get there when the trains are running and taxis can make me feel sick, particularly in Paris as the drivers insist you sit on the rear seat and drive like maniacs. On 26 September I took this route with one suitcase, and a folding Brompton in a shoulder bag. I ended up sitting in the end-of-carriage area with a smelly man and his smelly cat.

It was difficult to tell which of the two smelled worse. Fortunately he got off with his cat at Place d’√Čtoile, two stops before I changed at Chatelet des Halles for the line to Gare du Nord.

Cancer anyone?

Cigarettes are sold in France without individual brand packaging and with written and photographic warnings.

Route des Princesses

image

Last month I cycled the furthest distance I have ever done in one month - over 1400 kilometres. I enjoyed almost every ride, whether local to the South-East of England, in the North of England, across Northern France to Paris and back, or in Spain. Looking forward, I plan to complete the same distance in under one week in August, but I feel my preparations for this are going well. So far in 2017 I’ve spent over 123 hours on my bicycle and climbed nearly three “Everests”. In the past four weeks I have averaged over 300 km per week (sometimes this has been only one ride a week).  I’ve also “stepped up” the distance I am comfortable cycling in one day.

The photograph above was taken near the Agricultural and Horticultural School (Lyceé Agricole et Horticole) at Saint Germain outside of Paris. It had been raining intermittently during the day, and I had a puncture but, in the afternoon as I passed her on the way back towards Dieppe, the skies had started to clear (as you can see).

Totem pole

image

An example of cultural appropriation? In this instance from the culture of the First Nations of the Pacific Northwest to the children of Nanterre, West of Paris.

In the movies

image

I passed this movie set about an hour ago, on the way to Gare Du Nord in Paris. It seemed interesting but there was not much action taking place.  Everyone except the woman with the pole appeared to be waiting for something.
