Totem pole

image

An example of cultural appropriation? In this instance from the culture of the First Nations of the Pacific Northwest to the children of Nanterre, West of Paris.

In the movies

image

I passed this movie set about an hour ago, on the way to Gare Du Nord in Paris. It seemed interesting but there was not much action taking place.  Everyone except the woman with the pole appeared to be waiting for something.

A decent cycle lane

image

Nanterre has some decent segregated cycling infrastructure, such as this cycle lane. Depending on the time of day I see children, adults and disabled people making use of this lane. It is bidirectional - cyclists are on one side of the road, and cycle in both directions here. This has advantages and disadvantages. At a nearby spot the cycle lane crosses the road, and I noticed one cyclist continue on the pedestrian path. He was going to a building 30 metres beyond the crossing, so it didn’t make sense for him to cross at the cycle/pedestrian crossing (which has a traffic light) and then cross back to his destination a mere 30 metres further on.

Paroisse Saint Joseph

image

On my way to my meeting yesterday, I walked past the familiar Chapel of Saint Joseph. I enjoy observing the changes in the buildings and their neighbourhoods over the months and years that I pass through the nearby park and suburbs.  According to the church website:

The Chapel of Saint Joseph was constructed in 1933, and celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2013.

The Chapel was built by the architect Jean Margerand under the direction of the Diocesan Association of Paris; The foundation stone was laid on 30 April 1933, and the Church was blessed in December 1933. The hall and rectory were built in 1975 and new rooms were added to the church at that time.

The main structure of the church comprises concrete and brick, while the roof is made of slate and zinc. The vaults of the chapel are partly paneled. A renovation of the chapel (walls and floor) was undertaken in the Summer of 2013.

This morning’s sunrise as seen when passing this wind farm in Northern France, on the train to work in Paris.

Snow today

image

There was an absence of snow in the Alps this season (and last) but fortunately I am at the European resort with the third most snow. It’s just pretty cold, and in the morning it was foggy on the mountain.
