Gockelburg

Gockelburg

I haven’t been to Gockelburg restaurant near Karlsrue in Germany for over a year now, and haven’t written about it. I have nothing new to write about it.

However last month over 14 people came to my site via a search engine, while searching for something to do with Gockelberg.  I was checking my photos from the restaurant and came across the above video-stills which show the South African waitress who works there. I forget her name, but she apparently speaks fluent German.

I used Picasa to create the collage. This handy bit of (free) software comes from the Google stable.

il y a de gros embouteillages

traffic jam

The Basel-Frankfurt autobahn passes just to the east of Strasbourg and provides a fast convenient route to both Basel and Frankfurt (via Karlsrue).  At certain times I have found traffic heavy on this road. (For example some Sunday evenings returning from Basel, or some Monday mornings returning from Frankfurt).  At the best of times however it takes less than two hours to get to either Basel or Frankfurt.

One Saturday morning I was buzzing up to Frankfurt and hit the above traffic jam. There had been an accident up ahead and we waited, like this, for two and a half hours for the various emergency services to see to the problem and get us going again.  The traffic announcement on the radio was along the lines of

Verkeer stoppte für sechs Kilometer

The past week I have been alive, but on a very slow internet connection. I hope to blog more regularly again from now on.

The above shrine (I assume it is one) is to be found opposite the Gockelburg restaurant. There is a small red lamp at the base of the statue, which is continuously lit.

Frühling

Gockelberg

Last night Ash, Ant and I went into Strasbourg after work. At 8pm we then drove back north, and over the border towards Karlsrue, and the “Chicken Castle” restaurant, where we met up with Jurgen, Frans, Markus, Michaela, Carles & Frederic. After the meal we went next door to the Italian restaurant (photo above) for coffees/tea/hot chocolate.  It was a very pleasant evening but meant another late night, as we got back to Haguenau after midnight.  I noticed the temperature was 15 C when we got back. Quite a change in just a couple of weeks.

Inside Gockelburg

Gockelburg

I put together the above picture from a series of stills that I captured from a video I took inside the restaurant last night. These are definitely the people I saw in the restaurant but (as Franz said) does anyone know their names? grin

Not much happened today.

Earlier I tried to find out on the Royal Mail website how much it would cost to, say, send a parcel of 20 x 30 cm weighing, oh, not much more than a telephone, to an address in the UK.  (Just out of interest).  Unfortunately their website is crap, in places. I did finally get the information, but first I tried to enter the information under the “Quick Find” box as follows:
Where is it going? UK only
When do you want it to get there? 3 days or more
Do you want a guaranteed service? yes
The response was There are no matches to your current selection, please try again

Is this stupid or what? If I select Next day guaranteed instead of 3 days or more then I have two options. Surely someone who selects 3 days or more is saying that they are not overly concerned about the time that will be taken for the parcel to reach the destination, rather than insisting that the delivery must take more than two days.

So, technically, it is not possible to have recorded delivery and only have the delivery in 3 days time (or more). Thanks to Royal Mail for clearing that one up! Now, is it better to deal with an anally-retentive computer system or with an anally-retentive person working behind a counter somewhere?

Gockelburg

Gockelburg

This afternoon Fabienne invited me to meet up in Strasbourg this evening and visit the Christmas market with some friends. I had no other plans, except to rest, so agreed. Then at 6:30 p.m. she phoned to cancel the arrangement, and make another for Friday. So I immediately called Carles who had mentioned he was going to Karlsrue, Germany, with some other guys and ended up tagging along.

The above photo is where we had varying degrees of hot spicy chicken, bread and beer. The restaurant was packed, and one of the guys had booked last Friday. After that we went to another pub/brasserie in Karlsrue.

As it is late, I will not be posting the story I mentioned yesterday about Denise.  I’ll do so tomorrow.
