In time and space

A series of time-lapse photographs taken en route from Rotterdam to London City exactly one week ago today.

Making your mind up

The announcer has just told us (in three languages) that the train to Rotterdam, Antwerp, Brussels and Paris will be departing from platform 5 or 6. Keeping the passengers alert? Promoting mental and physical fitness perhaps?

Manneken Pis

I took this photo recently in the Netherlands of graffiti painted on a wall. The adjacent street sign shows a picture of a young boy peeing. I imagine that if the Netherlands have a problem in that department it is more likely that the big boys are getting drunk and pissing in the streets.

Early Christmas Record

There we have it, my record for the earliest Christmas marketing spotted in a supermarket: 11th February, at this supermarket in the Netherlands.

Netherlands Rail Chaos

So the snow has struck hard and given me two miserable days travelling to-and-fro a meeting here. But with these slow, delayed and over-crowded trains I’m almost starting to feel homesick now.

My only observation of the situation here is that the railway staff have been very patient and understanding of irate passengers. I tend to think that in the UK, no matter what the circumstances, complaints are not treated in such a positive and engaging way.

I spotted these people “blacked up” and selling chocolate bars at a railway station in the Netherlands recently. I was taken aback because this would generally be considered racist in the UK. But is it racist behaviour in other cultures and situations?

There are a number of definitions of racism, see the Childline definitions and wikipedia.

My own concern is that the sales staff from Droste Chocolates have not only blacked up their faces but they are dressed as simpletons, possibly clowns. This reinforces my impression that there is an element of “having fun at the expense of another group”. A different impression would be given if they were dressed as Grace Jones clones, say. This is strange marketting from a company that aspires to sell high quality chocolate. It is a big name Dutch company that has an effect named after it.
