Shared cycle lanes

image

In the Netherlands last week I noticed that bicycles and scooters happily share lanes.

I’m off to a sunnier place for a week. Ciao.

Rotterdam by day

image

Curtains aside, this appears to be a view down to the Maas River and Rotterdam centre from the Erasmus University.

Rotterdam by night

image

This is the view of the Rotterdam skyline (I assume) from Erasmus University. I use the word “assume” because I arrived with some colleagues in the middle of the night, so I feel a bit disoriented. I’ll take another shot in the morning for comparison.

Airport Sunset

Schiphol Airport

It’s a beautiful evening, but it’s the end of a long week and I’m glad to be heading home.

Schiphol is the fourth busiest airport in Europe. It has 6 runways (and a 7th is planned). London Heathrow Airport fortunately still only has two runways.

Haarlem Station

Haarlem Station

The railway logo here in the Netherlands reminds me a bit of the “double arrow” British Rail logo for railway stations, which was adopted in January 1965 (according to Wikipedia).  The Netherlands railway logo was adopted in 1968, and although Wikipedia doesn’t suggest this I am tempted to feel that the Dutch designers copied the main concepts of the British one.

Canal sunrise

image

It’s a beautiful day.  After the nightmare of sleeping in the hotel opposite the town clock (think “bong” every 30 minutes) it was a pleasant walk to the train station. My colleagues say a little local knowledge goes a long way: they had asked for rooms facing the back of the hotel. Mine overlooked the town square.
