Night and day in Barcelona

This is Torre Agbar in Barcelona, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. Agbar is a Spanish water company that occupies most of the building.  Wiki states that:

According to Jean Nouvel, the shape of the Torre Agbar was inspired by Montserrat, a mountain near Barcelona, and by the shape of a geyser rising into the air. Jean Nouvel, in an interview, described it as having a phallic character. As a result of its unusual shape, the building is known by several nicknames, such as “el supositori” (the suppository), “l’obús” (the shell) and some more scatological ones.

It closely resembles the London Gerkin.  The French word for gerkin cornichon also has a “scatalogical meaning” in French.

On Monday morning I awoke in Barcelona. This was not suprising as I went to sleep here on Sunday night. That evening I managed to go for a walk along the promenade, enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of the sea. On Monday evening it was too wet to repeat this exercise even if I had had the time.

Cycling in Barcelona

image

There are some nice cycle paths along the sea front. I don’t know whether they extend through the entire city though. There’s also a cycle hire scheme, and I would ate hired a bicycle if it weren’t raining, and getting dark.
