The caravan parked up behind the Dungeness nuclear power plant last weekend appeared to be flying an EDL flag.

London Edinburgh London Documentary

Following on from the previous two videos, which touched on this subject, here is the trailer for the documentary on the London-Edinburgh-London cycle ride. Video by MadeGood.Films

Yad Moss

Following on from the Teesdale video that I posted the other day, I thought I would post this video of Yad Moss, which featured in that video but which also marks the “high point” of the London-Edinburgh-London cycle ride. The video is also by Damon Peacock. I enjoyed climbing this (in both directions) last month, although a strong Southerly wind picked up on my second day, which may the reverse climb back to Thirsk somewhat challenging.

Holloway Lane

This lovely lane is closed to motorised traffic (except for access) and it is the second time I have cycled it. Both times were unintentional: The first time I had not realised it would have sand and horse dung on it in many places, and this time I hadn’t realised I was following my “old” route map. After the first experience (when the weather was wetter than this time) I created a second route which bypassed this on the main roads.

I’m glad to have experienced it in better weather, and on my gravel touring bicycle rather than my thin-wheeled road bike. There is walk over at Pete’s Walks that describes a walk that takes in part of this road, and there are photos of the beautiful surrounding countryside on the page. I didn’t linger to take any myself.

Holloway Road is in Buckinghamshire, in the Chiltern District, and just outside the town of Chenies.  At the bottom of the lane (farthest from Chenies) where I entered, there is a ford crossing the River Chess, but there is also a wooden bridge for pedestrians.

This is a video by Damon Peacock on the Teasdale section of the London-Edinburgh-London cycle route. It describes quite nicely some of the stretch between Thirsk and Brampton that I did a couple of weeks ago.

Wildlife Conservation Area

I stopped here earlier at Girlington Bank, Ovington, Richmond (South of Barnard Castle) for a bio-break, and was struck by this “wild” section next to the rape seed fields, which is signposted:

Wildlife conservation area
Do not enter

Unfortunately the second sign just below this one was bleached free of all words (I assume it would have provided more details about what is trying to be achieved here). The yellow crop is of course the oil seed rape, which does not have a great environmental record and comprises something like 11% of all crops grown in this country. Now I don’t know whether to congratulate the farmer for this measily conservation effort next to vast swathes of an environmentally unfriendly crop, or to congratulate them for mitigating or offsetting their environmental damage somewhat.

Free Riding

Seen in Reigate last weekend. Mum and Dad were having a gentle argument just prior to this about who was going to ride their own bike, and who was going to drag junior along. Dad won.
