Ai Weiwei

The above sculpture is known as Tree, and is by the artist Ai Weiwei.

According to a nearby plaque:

Tree comprises structures made from sections of dead trees collected on the mountains of Southern China. Over several months, these disparate parts were pieced together in Ai’s studio in Beijing to create the eight ‘complete’ trees seen here. These artificial constructions have been interpeoples  as a commentary on the way in which geographically and culturally diverse peoples have been brought together to form ‘One China’ in a state-sponsored policy aiming at protecting and promoting China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The exhibition at the Royal Academy in London is now closed.
