Alliance Française

Place de la Republique, Strasbourg

I left work at 5pm, drove into Strasbourg, and signed up for a month’s intensive evening classes in French language with the newly arrived Alliance Française. I was complimented twice, on conversing in my conversational French, with the phrase

You manage quite well.

Yes, true. But I will give this one month and see if I can make faster progress. 

One thing that intrigues me is that I will be learning things like le plus-que-parfait, le subjunctif and la passé composé.  I wonder how important that it really is: I learned English just fine without having to name all the components of its grammer. And yet these French language teachers seem to be positively inspired by these terms. We will see…

After my first lesson I walked around La Place de la Republique. It was cold so I didn’t hang around, but I managed to admire the forms of the bare trees. These are shown silhouetted against the Bibliotèque Nationale in the photograph above.
