Chicheley Street

Chicheley Street

This is Chicheley Street in Waterloo, London SW1.

I was interested to read here that Chicheley is a town in the English county of Milton Keynes.  I had never realised that Milton Keynes was a county, but it has apparently been one since 1995. Before that it was part of Buckinghamshire.

According to that website, Chicheley (like Oxted) is a Domesday town, so-called because it is mentioned in the Norman “census” of 1086 by that name.  It was spelled Cicelai in those days, and is a word of Anglo-Saxon origin meaning Cicca’s clearing.
