Grenade found on New Quay beach

It was apparently discovered by a child while digging a sandcastle, the one on the left in the top photograph. I asked a police officer what type of grenade it was, and he replied that he didn’t know except that it was a “pineapple shaped one”. Shortly after these photos were taken, the grenade was detonated in a controlled explosion and the crowd broke into spontaneous applause. The explosion was louder than I expected.
