Keep Clear

keep clear

Another photo from Parliament Square.

Alcohol is a very necessary article… It makes life bearable to millions of people who could not endure their existence if they were quite sober. It enables Parliament to do things at eleven at night that no sane person would do at eleven in the morning.

~ George Bernard Shaw (1907).

It seems that not much changed in this regard over the past 100 years. While Parliament is in thrall to the bottle, what hope is there for young people in this country who are in the grip of an endemic problem of alcohol abuse?  Late last year there were reports that alcohol kills 22,000 people a year in this country.

Anyhow, Urban 75 has a panoramic view of Parliament Square.

Yeah, it is a big worry. I’m no T-totaller but I work in a place that sees the results of a fairly moderate drinking lifestyle on the liver, every day. While we worry about an aging population suffering from age-related cancers, a generation of younger people will, very likely, be cut before their prime. In my experience, smoking tends to kill quickly (and nastily) but alcohol makes everything rubbish, makes you leak on the inside and can slowly and insidiously imbue you with indignity and death. As for those that smoke and drink….
