le sanglier

This photo is of a statue of a wild boar, which is to be found in the small park next to the train station in Haguenau. In the photo are also remnants of snow from a snowfall we had earlier today.

Since I was a young lad, reading the adventures of Asterix I have thought that wild boar are the among most intelligent, peaceful, and graceful animals around. I never quite approved of the way they were scoffed down at the end of each books, and often along the way as well. So it was with great excitement last summer that I received news from Peter that a family unit of wild boar could be spotted in the forest next to the Auberge aux Sept Chenes. After work one evening I made my way to said forest, found an empty hunters mirador, and waited patiently, armed with my camera.

Unfortunately I did not see any of the creatures, and ended up taking photos of an empty clearing in a dark forest. I did however hear a loud grunting sound from nearby, probably of a stag, and the experience will remain vivid in my mind for a long time. This is mainly because of the large number of mosquitos I encountered.

I thought of this experience recently when I read about yet another herd of “wild” boar Posted by bigblue on 23/02/2004 at 11:36 PM
