Worth Way and Forest Way

Yesterday I took the train to Three Bridges near Crawley and then cycled 30 kilometres cross-country to Eridge, where I caught the train home. The route only uses roads in few places as it follows disused railway lines and bridlepaths. Unfortunately at the end you also have a few kilometres to the station on busy narrow roads.

I had never been to Three Bridges before, and was impressed at the bicycle parking on offer. Here’s a selection. I was less impressed by the busy roads outside the station and the aggresive drivers. That said it is only a couple of hundred metres to the start of the trail and most of that is on a (narrow) bicycle lane. The rest of the way you could easily push your bike on the pavement.

The route itself is easy to find and follow. It goes over and under the busy roads, like this one.

There were lots of people on the path, mostly going in the opposite direction to me. I believe that in the direction I was travelling it was uphill, particularly for the first half of the route. In the first half of the route the cyclists I encountered didn’t engage in eye contact or conversation (whereas the walkers and horse-rider were more friendly). From Forest Row the cyclists again adopted the nod-and-greet approach I am more familiar with.

Unfortunately the last few kilometres to Eridge Station are via road (a busy and narrow road for the most part). Some of the road signs appeared to be missing and I had forgotten the way so I just missed my train by 5 minutes. The trains to Oxted are hourly so I had a bit of a wait.

At the station was a steam engine which was taking a bunch of people of a certain age on a dinner trip to Groombridge. They served them a meal as the steam train pulled out. I was interested to note that the steam train was “assisted” by a diesel engine at the rear of the train…. albeit a “classic” also -  the plate on the side reads “R.J. Mitchell, Designer of the Spitfire” with an image of a spitfire above it.
