The crater left by a shell, next to the trenches, Belgium. The trees have all grown up around the trenches, now, enclosing them to form a small, secluded space, very different from the places they must have been before.

The landscape of the battlefield, with the craters, is amazing. Last year I visited Verdun with your sister. They have also planted trees there now, but the vast battlefield is permanently transformed by the pockmarks of craters. Many still lie dead in the battlefields, buried by shells and left where they fell.
I would like to go and visit Verdun again, as see Ypres. Such experiences bring home the reality and the senselessness of war.
