Walking from our hotel, through a concrete jungle and then Chinatown (if indeed that’s what it’s called here), we came to the old city. The Notre Dame cathedral beckoned, but they were not admitting visitors so we made our way down the back streets until we came across this restaurant with the live jazz duo.
Two hours of drinking-(water, as my body felt like it was 4 a.m.)-and-listening later the third in our party arrived and we ate supper. After that we were all wrecked and caught a cab back to the hotel. As appears customary in this city, the taxi driver added his own tip. I used to despise the taxi drivers in Rome, with their cheating and stealing ways (“licenced highway robbery” I said) but the difference here is that the local highway robbers openly add a tip and it would clearly be rude to refuse to pay it. Even the waiters are continually reminding one that the gratuity is not included in the bill. Give me France where the service lacks any false charms but where the 10% service charge is included automatically.
This morning (yesterday by the time this post appears) the strike in the hotel appears to have spread: breakfast was cancelled. Instead we were offered weak coffee and sickly sweet muffins in the lobby.
Good grief I have just noticed that I’m turning into a moaning old git. Well to end things on a positive note: my work went well, my clients here are lovely people, and the company is doing some constructive work to tackle climate change.

Here’s the same view as yesterday, but taken in the morning light.
I’m staying in a hotel that is on strike, and we have just had a power cut. According to another guest they had a “false fire alarm” the other night and guests had to go down the stairs and into the street with their pajamas on. I don’t know if these incidents are related. I hope we don’t have another fire alarm as I don’t have pajamas.

According to my calculations I’m in a city at about 75 degrees longitude West of Greenwich. I can’t be completely sure because I’m a bit disoriented about where the run rises and sets and I am not sure I determined local time correctly by observing when the sun was highest in the sky.
