A colleague at work suggested we should join the local gym. Through our work we can get a special rate (£28 per month). I might go and check it out: they have the usual facilities plus pool.
In the meantime I pulled out my bike this evening, brushed off the cobwebs, pumped up the tyres, and took it for a spin. The hills around Oxted are steep, but it’s a zero sum game because you always end up back where you started. Half the time you are going downhill.

Our bikes were stolen about 20 years ago, and we’ve never replaced them because now the shops only sell mountain bikes, and plains bikes cannot be had for love or money.
You can still get them - either as a Halfords version or try

There are a lot of cycles named after Coventry/Salisbury etc
We got the bikes out a couple of weeks ago in Salisbury but I’m not sure which are the most dangerous - tourists or cars..or maybe tourists in cars.
If you sound the ching ching bell at most middle aged people in the road they move - try with yoots and you’re likely to get pushed off!
