Getting around without sight

I’m traversing London on my way back from Tyne and Wear. Getting onto the underground at King’s Cross is this blind man, with the assistance of a London Underground staff member. She tells us all to wait, guides him onto the train, and says goodbye to him from the platform.

He declined the offer of a seat from a woman on the train. I found myself standing next to him (first photo above) and struck up a brief conversation. He was going to the same stop as me (London Bridge) and he assured me that he would be fine finding his way around when he got there.

It seems a little local knowledge goes a long way, because I was astonished to see that he was met as he stepped off the train by another staff member of London Underground who took his arm and led him quite rapidly up to the main rail station. I followed them, on what turned out to be a convenient short-cut for me.

It didn’t diminish my admiration for this man in any way, but I was pleasantly suprised that the London Underground give such personalised service. Perhaps they were showing him the ropes, or perhaps it’s just one of those things that they do on request.
