Leaving London

image

I’m leaving this afternoon on a plane, something that I now avoid where possible. This is the view over London - Hackney Marsh I think - looking down to the Thames. I’m on a seven hour flight, but I arrive two hours after I leave. Something about longitude, the determination of which was a problem solved for earlier travellers by John Harrison. He did this by creating an accurate marine watch so that sailors could use the method determined by Gemma Frisius..

My wristwatch is accurate, and set to GMT (summer time). By establishing local time at my destination, and comparing it to the time on my wristwatch, I will attempt to establish the longitude of my destination city. To do this I will have to observe when the sun is at its highest in the sky. This may be difficult as I will be running workshops for two days, but it will give me an excuse to look out of the window from time to time.

Interesting- I once took a 10 hour flight from Moscow to New York—left at 11:00 am and arrived at 1:00 pm.
