Yesterday I took this time-lapse video of my bird feeder. It shows over 12 hours condensed into a 7 minute video. I was hoping to see if the doves were back at the meadow bird seed mix. Judging by the little surprise near the end, reality can indeed be worse than you imagine.
Interestingly there seems to be an entire genre of time-lapse videos of bird feeders over on YouTube. I’ve moved the feeder to the middle of my lawn, and wondering if I should be keeping a (video) eye on it again today…

Indeed. I’ve placed an order for humane rat traps. I don’t want to kill these fellow vermin, but would be happy to take them on a longish drive out into the country.
I repeated the time lapse exercise today: day 2. I was quite impressed by the acrobatics.
It’s somewhat ironic that in another blog post (A Visitor) you told us that you are using this feeder for “pest control”.
I used to have a female pet rat called Mr Nibbs. They are highly intelligent creatures.
Yes, oopsie. I wrote that other post a couple of days before it appeared.
Are you sure your rat’s name wasn’t spelled Ms Turnips?
Two Ronnies: four candles / fork handles?
@Janet: Yes, sorry about that.
I put up my humane rat trap last night. I have some infra-red video footage of the thing sniffing around the trap but it declined to go in for the bait. The company that sells the traps said to be patient for the first week because “rats are highly intelligent”.
Mmm.
Like hell. I’m not coming home until that thing’s gone. Though it’s a very cute colour - I thought rats were ugly and brown. This one seems to be manicuring itself well. How appropriate that it should come to our garden. I bet other people don’t have such well-groomed vermin! Thank goodness my bedroom’s up the stairs.
LOL, It’s been getting a balanced diet from the birdfeeder that’s keeping it’s coat nice and shiny....
The trick, when I’ve caught it, will be to find somewhere else that’s suitable to let it go....
It is pretty - could it be a Catalonian hamster (as popularised by the TV series Fawlty Towers)?
Rats, pigeons and humans. The earth’s successful and adaptable vermin.
