More thoughts on the Demonstration in London today

image

Here’s another photo from the demonstration in London against the attacks on Gaza, taken in Hyde Park this afternoon. I believe you can just make out one of the groups of Quakers that I spotted today. They are a group that I have deep respect for. What you cannot see in the photo is that 20 metres in front of the Quakers were a group of people purporting loyalty to the so-called Party of God, a somewhat violent organisation. I say “purporting” because I have my doubts. In any case they were a very small group (less than 10) and whenever they started chanting their religious slogans the people around them started chanting louder “Free, Free, Palestine”. Perhaps I came across the group that Sunny experienced last week.

I also wanted to link to a post by my “former spiritual advisor”. (This goes back to when I was a child, and he was banned under SA’s draconian apartheid laws). His post is on Gaza and entitled Moral clarity, moral ambiguity, and moral confusion.  As someone who has a tendency to immediately condense an issue into “haves” and “have nots” and then to take the side of the “have nots”, I found this illuminating. Perhaps it is aimed at people who are not as horrified at the carnage that is taking place in Gaza as I am. However as Sunny wrote today

Peace is difficult because it will come when Palestinians and Israelis recognise the essential truth - that their peace and security is mutually inter-dependent.

That’s difficult for those at the centre of the conflict. But what’s your excuse?

Ever stop and wonder if you’re making it worse?

I think we could all do with a stop and think about this.
